Who doesn’t love the idea of buying a fiberglass paddle board? Paddle boarding is popular and millions try it every year. It’s a fun pastime and certainly one that is taken the world by storm. You can surf, enjoy a paddle out on the waves, or even try a spot of yoga! Paddle boards are incredibly fun and there is so much you can do with them.

Paddle boards are great for all the family and it’s a fantastic way to enjoy some quality time together too. Stand up paddle boards are a lot of fun and incredibly popular too, but, which one should you buy? Should you opt for a plastic or a fiberglass board?

Here are a few things you need to know about them both and to find the right board for you.

    Plastic Vs Fiberglass Costs

It’s difficult to decide which paddleboard to buy because there are so many. However, one of the first things you need to compare, are the costs. Prices will vary from board to board. Plastic boards are incredibly cost-effective and are far less costly than fiberglass. Plastic boards typically cost between $200 and $600; that’s a reasonable amount and certainly something most people would be able to afford for stand up paddle boards.

Fiberglass starts from around $700 and the costs climb significantly from there. That’s a major point of contention. You could technically buy the most expensive plastic paddling board below the lowest cost for a fiberglass board. That’s a sticking point, but, of course, it’ll all depend on where you shop and whether you buy brand new or used. You may be able to pick up a few fiberglass paddle boards for less than $700 if you shop around and buy used.

Does that mean plastic is better? Well, it’ll depend on your likes, needs, and of course budget. However, costs alone shouldn’t have to determine which boards you buy.

    The Size of the Board

Board sizes vary. Fiberglass boards are generally longer than plastic and that may determine which one you buy. Typically, the longer or bigger the board you have, the faster it’ll run so that’s vital to know. If you’re using the board for surfing or racing, then you may want a longer board. Of course, if you plan to do some yoga, a small or medium-sized board might be more suitable.

It’s the same with the width size. There isn’t much difference between plastic and fiberglass. If a board is wider then it’s generally more stable so if you want more stability, a wider board is needed. What size of board do you need? It’ll depend on what you plan to do once you’re on the water. Surfers might want a longer board to build up speed, whereas lazy fishermen might want a small but wide board for stability.

Boards are typically around 11 feet. Although, smaller ones are 9 and medium-sized boards are 10 foot. Smaller boards around 8 or 9 feet around are easy to maneuver so if you want to race your friends, this might be a great option. Again, it’ll depend on what you’re going to do with the board. A stand up paddle board can be between 32-36 inches in width.

The Stability and Weight of the Board

Plastic is heavier because it’s made from thicker materials and will help to offer more stability. Fiberglass is lighter, but can still offer good stability. When it comes to weight, fiberglass is the clear winner. It’s lighter than plastic because of the foam interior and is easier to carry back and forth from the water. Plastic remains a good choice, however, it’s thicker and heavier and that could prove problematic for some.

Fiberglass and epoxy make the finish smoother and more reliable for a fiberglass board. Of course, it’ll all depend on the specific paddle board and its overall size.

Plastic wins the durability test. It’s sturdier and may last longer; whereas fiberglass is made from a strong but breakable exterior. However, fiberglass wins on water. When you want to go out and surf, it’ll be more likely to offer a clean-cut feel. You can glide across the waves faster with the fiber boards and move around better. Epoxy resin will bond the stand up paddle board too and help make it stronger.

Plastic is more durable than fiber boards, but, fiberglass and epoxy will bond the paddle bond and make it better. Of course, if you’re not hitting the high waves and are more into gliding across the waves, most boards will be sufficient to carry you for a long time.

How to Choose a Fiberglass Paddleboard?

Firstly, consider how often this board will be used. If it’s a recreational pastime and something you’ll use frequently, you may want to invest in a good quality board, possibly high-quality. If, however, this is something you’ll try once or twice a year, it’s not advisable to go for a higher-end board. The reason why is because you’re not getting the best value for money.

Secondly, costs will matter. As said above, if you’re going to use the board a handful of times in the year, a less expensive board might be required. It doesn’t matter if you’re going to use the board once, three times, or a thousand times in the year, know your price range. Setting out a budget for a paddleboard can be a fantastic idea. You’ll be able to find a board that offers you good quality, but also, that’s value for money. By having a budget, you’re narrow the options down and that’s very useful indeed.

What’s your body type? Whether you have a small or large build, you must think about which board will be more suited to your body shape and size. For instance, smaller boards are probably more suited to children and those with a smaller build. However, a medium and large-sized board might be more suited to those with a larger build. It’s very important to consider these things before you buy a new paddleboard

Boards will vary considerably. Larger boards are better for fast surfing, while medium boards are great for yoga. Smaller boards are more useful for children and those who want to go surfing. So, do you know what you want to use the boards for? As said, children probably will be more suited to a smaller board and adults can use all three. It’ll depend on the use of the board.

When the board isn’t being used, where will it be stored? Most people don’t consider this and find they have trouble storing the board safely. It’s a nightmare if the board is left lying around so, it’s something to think about nonetheless. Consider the overall size of the board and what available storage space you have away from the water. If you have limited space, you may require a smaller board. You could find a paddle board near me very easily.
